In my eyes self sufficiency is being ready for the planned government invasion with aliens attacking and a zombie virus all at once. Also, JFK and Elvis will come out of hiding. Ok, so if you understand the first word of my penname you understand that I was making fun of the weirdoes who take self sufficiency too far to the point where they have MREs (meals ready to eat) out the whazoo. I think being self sufficient is important to the ecosystem and saving money, but there are better ways than storing fuel, ammunition and refrigerators in the lawn. Today I will bring to light a way of trimming grass and weeds, getting milk and making cheese. Yes the new tool in your arsenal is the goat.
The goat is a great addition to areas with a lot of grass and weeds. They come in varying breeds, shapes and sizes. For some reason lots of people have abandoned their roots and turned to cows for milk and meat. Yes you heard me; humans around the globe domesticated and herded goats before cows. Now before you call me a heathen for not worshiping your “bovine” god (badum-tss), goats create milk faster than cows and can yield more milk according to Alison Candlin (Country Skills, 2013).
The goat isn’t only used for milk. A good goat roast is another plus of your prized nanny growing too old to milk (nanny as in goat, not the woman who raised you). But why do you see more dairy and beef farms than goat fields? It is because since the cow was domesticated people have used goats less and less. Why you ask? I shall tell, because there were more people in the various towns they needed more food, and on a scale cows have more meat than goats and could produce more furs or leather. Among the various reasons why it would be great to own a goat it is also easier to keep goats than cattle for three main reasons, cows need more tidying, space and food than goats.
But Quips, we see shepherds in places on discovery channel and animal planet all the time. Yes you probably do, because in places like tropical Papua New Guinea goats can stand on greater inclines and navigate through tighter passage then their lumbering counterpart the cow. You also see them used a lot in deserts like Afghanistan and Iraq where the cows would eat the grazing grounds to nothing faster than goats and also drink less of the vital water. Goats are utilized from Australia’s golden deserts to Sweden’s icy tundra, goats are essential parts of many peoples’ lives so why not yours.
By the way I am very sorry for not gracing your eyes with my sarcasm, wit and information but I had a lot of homework and chores. I will try harder to write daily maybe or to write more in general.
